Prior to 1950 Thornton was mainly farmland - in 1952 F & S Construction announced the construction of a 5,000 home community which was named after the Governor of Colorado, Dan Thornton. The 1 square mile community incorporated as the City of Thornton in 1956 with a population of 8,640. It is now 27.2 square miles with a population of 130,307.
