Broomfield began as a farming community. Dryland farms dotted the landscape in the late 1800's and in 1885 Adolph Zang bought the area in the vicinity of 120th Avenue and Olde Wadsworth Boulevard. The train stop there became known as Zang's Spur, memorializing the spur off of the main railroad line where locally grown grains would be loaded into railroad cars for delivery to the Zang Brewing Company in Denver. Ultimately, Zang bought 4,000 acres of land in the area for his Elmwood Stock Farm where he bred Percheron horses and tended fruit orchards. Tenant farmers worked half the land in dryland crops and half in irrigated farming. There were reports of a large turkey operation on the southwest portion of the property. Zang's land of yesteryear is today's Broomfield. The municipality of Broomfield was incorporated in 1961 in the southeastern corner of Boulder County. It received its name from the broomcorn grown in the area. Over the next three decades, the city grew through annexations, many of which crossed the county line into three adjacent counties: Adams, Jefferson and Weld. In the 1990's, city leaders began to push for the creation of a separate county to avoid the inefficiencies of dealing with four separate court districts, four different county seats, and four separate county sales tax bases. In November,2001, Broomfield officially became The City And County of Broomfield.
